Blog 10

I'm thinking about using the picture on the left in my presentation. But the one on the right I'm actually going to use. The picture on the left is two girls most likely making fun of the other girl. It supports my argument in me saying what bullying is and here is an example of it. The one on the right is, self explanatory, hands shaking and says peer mediation. It supports my argument because this is what my proposal is mainly about. Where people come together and come up with a solution.

Class Blog 7

After typing my argument of fact paper, there are some possible solutions I came across to my topic about bullying in America.I will be talking about three of those possible solutions in this post.
The first solution I came across is that teachers in schools should be trained to notice kids getting bullied in schools. In some of the articles I'm using in this paper, they mention that teachers and staff of schools aren't trained in spotting kids getting bullied. If they were to spot kids getting bullied, they can step in and stop it. Also, they can get the parents into this when they contact them about what their child is doing. This is one of the pros of this proposed solution. But a con is that the teacher can't do anything once they stop it. What I mean is that they can't give them a punishment. All they can do is tell them to stop and not to do it again. This cycle will most likely repeat and repeat. The appeal to this solution is to the parents know that their child is being protected from bullying and the teachers are helping the problem with bullying. I don't think anybody will object to this because it's probably a good idea. Teachers are helping with the bullying problem by seeing it and intervening and stopping it.
The next solution is to talk with the kids who are getting bullied a lot. Yes there are anti-bullying programs to help with bullying, but the kids who keep getting bullied have dangerous thoughts that can affect their lives. For example, killing themselves. This is one of the strong examples about an effect of bullying. What parents and other people, like school staff, should really talk to the child getting bullied. They should checkup on them daily and see how they are doing. Parents should also do this as well. Doing this will probably decrease these thoughts in the children getting bullied. This is a pro about this solution. But a con is that the child may not listen because of all these interventions and may do an action that is unnecessary. Also, none of this may even work and the child may think all of this is useless. The appeal to this solution is that parents should think about trying this and see if it works. One objection to this is the time of day. On some days, parents and teachers could be busy and end up that one day, they don't talk to the child. Something can probably happen to him/her during that one day.
The last solution is that parents should monitor what websites their child goes on with chat-rooms. If their child does get bullied, they should probably do this. This brings up the concept of cyber bullying. What parents need to do is look at the websites their child goes to and see what is being talked about on the website and if there is any bullying involved. If they find something that they think bullying can happen on the website, they should block it and move on. Why? Because once something is said on the internet, it will stay there forever. This will help control the cyber bullying problem that can happen. This is a pro. A con is that the child may find a way to unblock it (depending on the age) and use it and the parents may never know. They could get bullied and something bad can happen and the parents will never know. The appeal is that parents should watch what websites their child goes on and make sure they aren't getting bullied. An objection to this proposal is that it's interfering with the child's freedom to go on websites they want to go on. They don't understand that they are trying to help them.
These are three possible solutions to the I came across in my argument of fact for my topic bullying.

Class Blog 5

1. Describe the approach:
       I. I don' think I'm clearing up any misconceptions on my topic. I'm just explaining what bullying is, some programs, another type of bullying and other things as well. My topic is pretty well known around America and everybody knows it's bad.
II. I don't believe I'm providing any new information about my topic. Like I said before, it's really well known topic. The information I have is common information some people know. For example some of the programs involved with bullying and what is cyber bullying.
III. No unknown issue here that is bringing people attention to it. However, the facts I have will tell people what we are doing about the issue, the problems and a few other stuff as well. But when we do the proposal paper, that's where I will get peoples attention about the topic.

2. My hypothesis is bullying is a major problem in America. What are we doing about this major problem in the United States.

3. What facts will convince everybody? The facts about bullies, the facts about the programs, facts about cyber bullying, facts about how schools are dealing with bullying and cyber bullying, and facts about who helps the people getting bullied.

4. I still need some facts about this topic. Those facts are how a bully picks his target, who gets bullied the most in school and everywhere else, and how has it affected America. Also, with the previous facts I already have, I still need to look into them a bit more and find a few more facts that will convince the audience that bullying is a major problem.

Class Blog 4

After reading and summarizing the three articles, I have learned a few things about bullying. Lets start with what I have learned from my topic of bullying.
First, cyber bullying. Apparently, cyber bullying has been around for more than ten years now. Before I read the article, I thought that it was a recent type of bullying that maybe started around 2005. Another thing that I also learned was that agencies have a hard time finding who is bullying over the internet. I thought it was an easy process because they can just look at the admen name and trace it. But anything can change. Next the programs involved. After reading the article about different types of bullying programs, I didn't know there was a whole bunch of them. This tells me that they are helping kids who are getting bullied in school and not ignoring it. Last, the article about bullies. The only thing I learned is that bullies go at a different angle depending on who they are bullying. The rest is common logic.
Out of all three sources I used, I learned that bullying is still a problem in America, but isn't going unreported or being dealt with. After reading two articles, they said that there are, as I said before, programs for bullying and agencies that help out as well. But on some cases like at a school, they do go unreported and eventually something can happen to the kid being bullied. To be honest, the only information I found surprising to me was the article about the types of bullying programs are out there. After reading an article saying that it goes unreported and its a decision by an administrator weather or not to use a program, it tells us that there are programs out there that will help you if your getting bullied.
There are a few holes I have in my research that are also questions I have. First is the cyber bullying article. The questions I have are how schools deal with cyber bullying and what types of punishments do they hand down when they find out. To find these answers, I will probably research more journal articles about school bullying and see what comes up. My next questions come from the bullying programs article. They are how many schools are using these programs listed in the article and how will they motivate schools to address the problem of bullying. To find this, I will probably look somewhere else and do research on some of the programs to find my answers. Last is the information about bullying. The questions I have are do people who get bullied have a negative view of violence and the publication date. I will probably look at journals to find the view of violence question. But the publication date one, I will compare it to other information I find about bullying and see if the information is the same or close to is when  it was published in 2001.

Class Blog 3

As I mentioned in the last blog post, my paper is about bullying. The research right now is going well in my standards. I'm finding some of the information on a few journals online and some in the library in a pamphlet. When I started researching, one keyword I used was bullying. That brought up a lot of stuff I can use. I had to sort through them to find ones that are useful, which I will talk about it later. A few other keywords I used were cyber and youth. All of these keywords are helpful for my research because I am finding information I can use. These are the only ones I have used so far.
There are a lot of sources for my topic of bullying. Just by typing bullying into the library search gave me more than 33,00 journals (after checking scholarly journals) to look at. Which I am using some of them right now. Going into this topic, I already knew that this was a major topic around America and that there is lots of information about bullying. So I wasn't really overwhelmed by the number of sources that came up.
The approach that some sources took were different. For example when I sorted everything out, one journal, that I might consider using, said anti-bullying programs for middle and high schools which talks about that. Another example is a journal that was focused on cyber bullying. So some of the information I'm getting is coming from different and same information about bullying.
They way I sort through the sources is first by clicking the scholarly check mark to get peer reviewed journals. Next I went to the publication date and made it from 2009-2014 to narrow it down a little. Then I went to geography and clicked USA. So far, this is how I sorted through all of my sources that came up when typing the word bullying. The criteria I used to figure out if it is useful or not is the publication date, who is it by, and who is the publisher.
Just by sorting through all of these sources, I learned that there are still lots of information about bullying that I can use and by looking at some titles, I saw that I can include some other type of bullying that I totally forgot about. That type is cyber bullying. When I thought of this topic, it slipped my mind. Now I know to look up some information about cyber bullying as well.

Class Blog 2

My topic is about bullying and how bad is it in America. The reason why I choose this topic is because it has a meaning to me. I was bullied in my 6th and 7th grade years in middle school and it wasn't a very good two years to start out in middle school. So I will be looking up information about bullying in America.
My possible questions for this topic are:

  1. What is bullying?
  2. How has it affected America?
  3. How many people have been bullied?
  4. Who gets bullied the most?
  5. How do people handle getting bullied?
  6. Are the people in a group that helps you?
  7. Who helps the people getting bullied?
  8. How does a bully pick his target?
  9. How do schools and other places deal with bullies?
Looking at the questions above, I would think all of these are important and useful to this topic. I would arrange them in this order by number:

  • 1
  • 2
  • 4
  • 6
  • 7
  • 5
  • 3
  • 9
  • 8
Why my topic is important is, in my view, because bullying is a major problem and topic across America. Why you may ask? Well because it is still happening today and the people who get bullied end up doing something they shouldn't have. Like maybe kill themselves. Who would care about this? The peoples parents would because if one were to read this paper, they would understand how bad it is in America. Who does it affect? It would affect someone getting bullied. They can read the paper and see how people deal with it and that there are people there to help you.
I am studding bullying in America because I am trying to find out how bad it is and to make readers understand how bad it is in America.

Biography About Me

My name is Jacob Brodbeck. This is my first time making a blog or even seeing one. So with the others in the future, please bare with me. I'm from a town just south of Austin, Texas called Buda, Texas. There is not a whole lot to do there except go to the park and skate park that just opened up. I'm currently enrolled in West Texas A&M University and currently on the bowling team here. I've been bowling for more than ten years now and I'm improving every day, month, and year. My dad has been teaching me since I was young. Now I have two coaches. My dad and the school bowling coach. My average is a 183 right now and my highest game bowled is a 289, 11 pins away from perfection.
Before I came to college, I was a really good bowler for my league, in tournaments, and in team competitions. I would travel with my league to a tournament and all of us will work together to make it to state. We did and came in third place. In tournaments by myself, I really excelled. Some I got first in, some in places where I still get scholarship money, one I got on an all state team, (etc.). In other tournaments I went to that were out of state, I surprised everybody. I wont get into to much detail, but lets just say that I come in with a low average and bowl really good. But college bowling is different. I'm still getting use to it with the patterns they put out there and working on everything else about how I bowl. But I know next semester, I will travel with the team to my first college tournament ever. I don't consider my self an expert in anything yet that applies to the real world. I just consider myself an expert in video games that I play.
My hobbies include drawing random stuff in a sketch book sometimes, watching videos on my laptop, and playing pool in my dorm lobby. What I enjoy about my hobbies is that when I do them, it kills some time so that the end of the day comes faster and whatever I have planned the next day can come along and I can do the event. Examples of that are bowling leagues, watching any type of sport, going on a trip to somewhere and lots of other stuff as well.
The subject that I like the most is math. I've been really good at math since elementary school and up till now. Teachers in the past would say I was a math wiz and it was true because I averaged a ninety or above in that class. Math is just stuck in my head. It can be any type of math. Science problems, algebra problems are the best kind I am best with. The process just stays in my head when I see how to do it. Then it takes me a very limited time to solve the problem. Depending on how long the problem is and how long the process to complete it is. I have no issues or problems that I feel passionate about right now. But that can all change in the future.
No offence to any other blogger out there, but I would like to know more about blogs. Whats the point of them? Like I said before, this is my first time blogging and I don't know if I understand blogging yet. Throughout the semester, I hope I will understand what the point of blogs are. I hope I didn't offend any blogger out there.
